Religulous

Over the next month or so, you are going to be hearing a lot, and I mean A LOT, about the new movie Religulous, which opens Oct. 3rd. It’s bound to be the talk of the country, next to this other thing coming in November.
For those of you that don’t know, this is Comedian/Social Commentator Bill Mahrer’s new documentary about which mixes the words “religious” and “ridiculous.” Here is a little taste:

Judging from the previews, Mahrer never interviewed anyone who has a real understanding of Religion. I doubt he interviewed John Piper or Greg Boyd, instead settling for the ACTOR WHO PLAYS JESUS AT THE HOLY LAND THEME PARK! But I understand. Hank Hennigraf wouldn’t have been as funny as this guy: (I didn’t know how to embed the video, but it is worth a click!)

Obviously, this is going to be very polarizing, and will piss off most people in the Church, and cause them to say Mahrer is the Anti-Christ. Which is sad, because we as Christians should know that we will be persecuted! Jesus promises us that (John 15:20). Instead of letting Mahrer get a rise out of us (which is, of course, his goal) let’s take this as a challenge to let our roots grow deeper in our faith, accepting anything we find challenging, studying and coming back with an answer for our self. Let’s, as Christians, think of this movie as a tool for us all to become mini-apologists and not a time bomb that is going to destroy our faith.

And let’s pray for Mahrer. I actually really like him, and have since he was hosting Politically Incorrect. Let’s remember that God loves him and wants desperatly for him to soften his heart.

  1. i am really excited about this movie, I love the opportunity to see my faith from another perspective.

  2. I agree with Vince. Any perspective of faith from an “outsiders” point of view, if viewed at with an open mind, can actually help you grow in faith. My prayer is simply that Christians do not condemn Mr. Mahrer. The last thing that needs to happen is for there to be heated backlash from Christians, when in actuality we are called to be patient and show love in situations like this.
